Welcome back!

We hope that you are having a good summer in the north and pleasant winter
in the southern climes, as you peruse our fourth issue of Focus on
Conservation Finance. As we announced last time, this issue focuses on
payment for environmental services (PES). This topic has grown in importance
throughout the world as people search for market mechanisms and incentives
that can lead to the conservation of biodiversity and vital ecosystems. Our
authors provide an interesting discussion of the opportunities and
challenges involved in implementing PES programs. Alain Lambert, CFA member
representing UNEP, has written a comprehensive explanation of PES, while
Sarah Davidson, of WWF, has reinforced Alain’s point of view while providing
a synopsis of a WWF project that has PES at its core. PES, when implemented
well, is an excellent example of what the Conservation Finance Alliance is
trying to promote – innovative methods of sustainable long-term financing
that deliver both public and private gain. Another type of gain is discussed
in this issue’s Financial Corner. Our sponsors at The Donnelly-Adams Group
at Smith Barney discuss Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) as a way of
“doing well, while doing good.”
