Call for Papers
(Flyer also attached for distribution)

“HIV/AIDS and the Environment”
Special Issue of the journal _Population and Environment_

and

Panel Discussion on the topic at the
Population Reference Bureau (Washington DC)

Guest Editors:

• Lori Hunter, University of Colorado at Boulder
• Roger-Mark De Souza, Population Reference Bureau
• Wayne Twine, University of the Witwatersrand

Although the recent XVI International AIDS Conference in Toronto examined
many
dimensions of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, little attention has been paid to the
relationship between the pandemic and environmental context. Even so,
HIV/AIDS
is shaping society’s impact on the natural environment in myriad ways at
many
levels, including the individual, household, and community. These various
impacts have important implications for millions of households, particularly
in
rural areas of developing countries.

Submissions examining the linkages between HIV/AIDS and a variety of
environmental issues are welcome, including natural resource use,
sustainability, agriculture and food security, gender and natural resource
management, and conservation. In addition, examinations of the ways in
which
environmental scarcity and policies may shape vulnerability to HIV/AIDS are
also of interest. We aim to have a range of papers that examine these
issues
at various scales (local, regional, national, international).

The guest editors are also interested in having a panel discussion on these
issues Spring, 2007 at the Population Reference Bureau in Washington DC.
Papers presented at the panel will receive special consideration for the
special issue of Population & Environment, although panel participation is
not
required for special issue publication.

Please send a note of interest by December 31 to Lori.Hunter at colorado.edu.
This
note should include a 1-paragraph overview of the topic of inquiry, and the
author(s) interest and ability to participate in the PRB panel discussion.

Completed manuscripts are due April 1, 2007 and should be formatted in
accordance with Population and Environment guidelines available in the
journal,
or at www.springer.com.
